Historical Background
The musical tradition of Fermoy dates back to the 19th century, with the presence of a British Army Garrison in the town. The Military Band which was located there was the only source of classical or European music available to local people at the time.
After Independence in 1922, the local parish clergy supported several ex-Army Bandsmen who remained in the town to form a town band, with the intention of providing music for civil and religious functions. Thus, Fermoy Confraternity Brass and Reed Band was establishes in 1923.
In the decades since, the Band has continued to play a central role in the life of the community, playing at civil occasions, sporting events, religious services of all denominations, and giving public musical recitals.
During the 1990s, the Band fell into decline, and by 1999 had ceased to function as an operating unit.
In June 2000, a Public Meeting was called, which demonstrated the strong support in Fermoy for the Band, and a Committee was elected with a mandate to revive and develop the Band. During this process of redevelopment the name was changed to Fermoy Concert Band and Fermoy Youth Band was also founded.
